RAMZi
RAMZi CA
Montréal producer and DJ Phoebe Guillemot also known as DJ FATi
Within RAMZi’s immersive “environmental music” is a portal to another dimension not entirely unlike our own. Tropical and psychedelic on the surface, her ambient soundscapes rumble deeply with balmy beats, altered vocals and disquieting fantastical elements. As DJ FATi, she lays bare the sonic influences on her mutant-polymorphic-spirit-child nature. An inventive self-taught producer with a hi-fi-meets-lo-fi production style and extended editing process, Guillemot is always on the search for distinct sounds, seeking out samples of kuduro, baile funk and obscure world music, dancehall and dub that evoke both her childhood memories and new forms of musical expression. Her own productions are a personal reimagining of those sounds, human and animal vocals, nature sounds and myriad others, driven by her feelings, experiences and something greater—a quest for a collective, psychoactive interspecies harmony. Her RAMZi excursions began with an experimental release on Montréal label Los Discos Enfantasmes, followed by her self-released Bébites album of expanded grooves and beats riddled with exotic instrumentation and pitch bent voices. As an experimenter in Vancouver’s underground house scene in 2015, Guillemot fully formed her RAMZi universe with Houti Kush on tape label 1080p, gaining a wider audience in the process.
